Kickstarter news: Monomyth and Near-Mage

It seems I'm not as done with Kickstarter as I thought. First, there's the Kickstarter for Monomyth, a take on the immersive simulation genre in the vein of Ultima Underworld and Arx Fatalis. And then there's the new game from the developers of the fantastic Gibbous, a new adventure game Near-Mage.

Let's start with Monomyth. If you've played Ultima Underworld or Arx Fatalis, you should have quite a good grasp of what there's to offer. You are thrown in a world filled with danger and puzzles which you can tackle the way you see best. If you suck at combat, you might try a stealthy approach or you can try and do battle from afar. See a locked door? Try to find the key, pick the lock or look for another way to enter. Hungry? Bake bread.

Monomyth is being developed by a single developer, Michel Tröls. If not for the already pretty functional demo of the game, I would not have been too quick to throw my money towards him, but as he did have a demo, I gave it a spin and found it to be already a very functional base for what he intends to do. You can find the demo from Steam and if you like what you see, consider backing the project. It has already gotten enough backers to be funded, but there still are some stretch goals in sight. So, the more money he gets, the more he can put into the game. The initial funding is going mostly towards music, sound effects and some other things he isn't able to do himself. Michel Tröls is already doing the 3D art and coding for the game, so he does have his hands full.

Now, Near-Mage, the new game developed by Stuck in Attic is a follow-up, but not a sequel, to Gibbous, which is one of the best-looking adventure games made in years. If you ask me, Gibbous is what I always envisioned adventure games to look like in the future, had the big companies like Sierra stayed in the game.

Near-Mage places you in the shoes of Illy Vraja, a young woman who is invited to Transylvania by her great-aunt. It is revealed, that she is a part of a long line of witches and it's time for her to begin her studies at the Transylvanian Institute of Magick.

There's no demo of Near-Mage, but judging from the pictures and the pitch video, it will continue in the footsteps of Gibbous. The art and the animation will again be top-notch and I suspect that the game will be fun as well.

It seems to me, that Near-Mage is going to get the funding it is asking for. At the moment I'm writing this, it has already gotten over 50% of its goal of 29 000 dollars. While they have not revealed all of the stretch goals, they have included support for Linux and game consoles into the mix of additional languages. So, again, the more money they get, the more they can pour into the game.

So, here you go. Two pretty good looking projects I ended up shelling a couple of bucks for. If you like what you see, consider doing the same.
