Ghostbusters: Afterlife trailer

In 2016 Sony tried to reboot Ghostbusters. The most memorable thing about that movie is the whole meaningless hubbub it caused all around the internet, which, in the end, led nowhere. Like where most internet fighting tends to go.

Now Sony is trying again. They kicked out the director of the previous reboot, Paul Feig and gave the job to Jason Reitman, the son of the director of the two first movies. With Feig out went the stars of the 2016 movie as well and this time, the plan is to continue decades after from where the second movie ended.

Here's the trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife

So, from the looks of this trailer, this is going to be very different from the 2016 movie. It looks like it is going to be very different from the originals as well, which isn't a bad thing necessarily. That said, though, it does have more of a kids movie vibe about it, something in the vein of the Goonies or some other 80s kids flicks. And with the cast, you can't escape from the strong feel of Strange Things

But I don't really know. This new iteration does look nice, I guess, but I'm not really feeling it. Despite the 2016 movie ending up being rather mediocre, its trailers had some spark of Ghostbusters about it, but this, not so much. It has an air of kids movie homage more than anything else, which in the end might just be Sony's marketing desperately trying to get that Stranger Things audience on board.

There's no way of saying if this movie will work based on this trailer alone. For what it is worth though, I can't say I am overly excited about this attempt at CPR to this dusty franchise.

Oh yeah, the kids in the new movie are related to the original Ghostbusters. And apparently, those of the original cast that are still alive are going to return to their original roles. Even Bill Murry, who has most notably been against appearing in new Ghostbusters movies (Sony threatened a lawsuit on him to get him lazily perform a cameo in the 2016 movie.)
