Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse (2024), originally developed by Telltale (2010), remaster developed by Skunkape Games
Played to completion on Nobara Linux. The only issue I had was that full-screen didn't work from launch; I had to manually set the game to full-screen from game settings on each launch.
What would happen if Max, the psychotic rabbit creature, got psychic powers? The powers to affect time and matter with the powers of his twisted mind? Scared? You should be, though I doubt you will be, the fool that you are.
The first episode pits Sam & Max on the heels of General Skunka'pe, who is looking for the Toys of Power, which can provide psychic powers to people. You now know where Max has gained his powers, like throwing his voice, turning into objects and teleporting to a telephone.
In the second episode, we step into the shoes? paws? legs? of Sam and Max's grandparents, Sameth and Maximus, who, after meeting a man called Papierwaite, go to look for the tomb and Sammun-Mak. It houses the Devil's Toybox, which Papierwaite intends to use to summon the elder god Yog-Soggoth.
As luck has it, in the third episode, someone has stolen Max's brains. Filled to the brim with juice and psychic powers. Sam, falling into the bad case of noir detectivism, finally locates the brains of his furry pal from the museum of Mostly Natural History, where Skunka'pe and Papierwaite have joined forces: the one after power, the one after elder gods gone wild.
The plot thickens when, in the 4th episode, an endless stream of cloned Sams attack the city. After taking shelter from Stinky's Diner, the always dynamic duo finds out that Momma Bosco's devices have been used to clone Sam. So, as Momma Bosco is dead, they need to perform a séance to find the root of the matter.
In the final episode, the crap hit the fan. Max has turned into a gigantic, unholy monstrosity, and Sam, with Sybil Pandemic, enters the body of the giant Max to cure him of what ails him. And that's really all I want to say about the last episode; you should play it yourself.
For the moment, The Devil's Playhouse is the last Sam & Max game that has been released. The original came out in 2010, and Telltale didn't do any other games for the series. Now, an interesting question is whether Skunkape has any plans to make more Sam & Max games. I wouldn't mind if they did; I've always liked the series, albeit none of the games, either from Lucasfilm or Telltale, have truly managed to reach greatness. Sure, they are fun, but I've always thought they miss something I quite can't place my finger on.
That said, The Devil's Playhouse is a perfectly solid adventure game. It has some nice laughs, decent puzzles and, really, all you'd expect from a well-made adventure game. If you are hankering for some comedic adventuring, you could choose worse.
Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse can be bought from Steam. It's around 20 euros, but it does end up on sale from time to time. You can also get it on consoles.
