Deus Ex:The Fall (2013)

Deus Ex: The Fall (2013), developed by N-Fusion Interactive, published by Eidos Interactive

As a note, I played this through in Nobara Linux. I had no technical issues during the game, and as far as I can tell, it ran flawlessly.

Before anything else, it needs to be said that if you are looking for a complete story from Deus Ex: The Fall, turn away now. The Fall is the first part of an episodic mobile game ported to Windows, which never got any further episodes. Considering that it was released 13 years ago, I don't think it's very likely that any further continuation of the story of an ex-soldier Ben Saxon will ever be made.

The Fall begins with a betrayal. Ben has joined the terrorist group Tyrants, the same one that causes so much trouble in the Human Revolution. He soon learns the Tyrants were just using him, and he ends up leaving them and going into hiding in Panama with a federal agent, Anna Kelso. Together, they are experiencing the effects of the shortage of augmentation drug Neuropozyne.

Ben decides to look for a black market for the drug and ends up finding a contact, but instead of Neuropozyne, he is given an experimental drug, Riezene, instead. This leads him to find a more proper contact from the Limb clinic, where he is promised the real thing if he figures out how Riezene is so widely available, despite still being in a testing phase.

In the end, it's all about illegal drug testing, supervised by the Belltower, Ben's former employer. Ben helps out Belltower pilot Alex Vega, who has been piloting a World Health Organisation agent during his investigation of the drug, to warn the WHO agent of the possible assassination attempt. Ben manages to find the man, but it is too late, as his former Tyrant mates kill the agent, and after this, Ben and Alex escape Panama City while Anna finds her own hiding place.

And there, the one and only episode of The Fall ends. Ben is on his way to Australia to check the manufacturer of Riezene in order to get to the bottom of the matter. As I stated before, this is an incomplete game and will never get a continuation.

As a game, The Fall is not terrible. It's a simplified take on the main game, Human Revolution, taken to mobile form, which is quite evident in the graphical fidelity in comparison to it. While the game is not bad-looking, especially for a mobile game from 2013, its low-resolution 3D models do jump out quite badly, especially in comparison to the Human Revolution released during the same time.

The game itself is a similar 1st person experience that brings in most of the things seen in Human Resolution. You can explore the rather small locations freely, using different paths to move around as well as using the augmentations to help get to places you'd normally be blocked from. The handful of quests you get can be solved either by brawn or brains. Depending on how you build Ben, you either go around in stealth or gun everyone down.

The stealth is made easier by the fact that if you do take down enemies, either by shooting or silently, they quickly disappear, so you don't need to hide them in any way. This is one of the heavily simplified aspects of the game.

Another huge difference is that there's no item seller in the game. Instead, you have a shop menu you can use to buy guns, items and mods to equip Ben as you see fit. The money is limited, though, so it's not that easy to fully mod him out.

And speaking of modding, the praxis kits needed to evolve Ben's abilities are gained through level-ups as well as found in the locations. So that's working the same way as it did in Human Revolution.

The Fall is not a terrible game by any means, but as it is eternally an incomplete one, it makes it more of a disappointing experience as well. It's a game with potential, but that potential was never taken to completion.

If you really feel that you need to play The Fall, you can get it from Steam. All I can say is that you should at least wait for a sale.
